11 | Opening Hampton's Vaults: Newly Revisited Artifacts

Opening Hampton's Vaults: Newly Revisited ArtifactsThe Hampton History Museum is happy to announce “Opening Hampton’s Vaults: Newly Revealed Artifacts,” a new exhibition taking place August 11 through November 16 on the second floor of the museum. The new exhibition will showcase artifacts that illustrate the town’s cultural, political, and military history. Many of the items, donated by local citizens, have never been on previous display. Ordinary in nature, the often-overlooked (but useful) objects of everyday experience highlight the unheralded routine of Hampton citizens through the decades. Featured items on display include a horse-drawn plough, a sign and menu from Bill’s Barbeque, a cash register from Goldstein’s furniture store, a shovel used in the W.P.A. projects during the Great Depression, and a compass from a waterman’s fishing vessel. Other items include women’s clothing and city maps from the collection of Girard Chambers Sr. and Jr.

Rolling of the Bulls 2012An “oddball” event presented by Marker 20 and sponsored by the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina Hotel. Dominion Derby Girls is an all-female flat track roller derby league formed with the purpose of promoting the sport of roller derby and giving back to the community. They are not for profit tax exempt organization that donates volunteer time and proceeds from bouts to charitable causes in the Hampton Roads region. The Dominion Derby Girls follows all rules and regulations of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and is a proud member of the WFTDA. Above all, they are an amateur athletic organization, priding itself on the strength and diversity of its all-female skaters. The Rolling of the Bulls course starts at the corner of Wine Street and Queens Way.  The group will head up Wine Street, take a right on Lincoln Street, take a right on Eaton Street, a right onto Queens Way, and stop at Marker 20. The event begins at 12:45 p.m. with the Blessing of the Bulls and the .5 mile run starts 1:00 p.m. Each runner MUST wear white with a red scarf and sash (so the girls know exactly who to hit!) and creativity is highly suggested. Individuals must be at least 12 years-old to participate and the cost is free. From 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., come into Marker 20 for “Party on the Deck.” The fun includes live music by Come in Tokyo and a custom red scarf, drinks, and delicious paella (Spanish rice dish).
